The Farmhouse is a testament to BXB Studio's commitment to designing buildings that are modern yet steeped in tradition. The design replaces five existing farm buildings due for demolition with five contemporary structures, each with a unique shape inspired by the existing farm layout, terrain, view axes, and functional needs. This innovative approach to design and architecture has resulted in a residential manor that is both modern and reminiscent of traditional Polish rural architecture.
One of the unique features of The Farmhouse is its large glazing, which allows the uncompromising wooden structure of the building to be seen from the outside. This design element not only showcases the building's robust structure but also invites natural light into the garage. The three central barns are compact, single-story buildings with slate-covered roofs, adding a touch of modernity to the traditional design.
The Farmhouse was created simultaneously on paper, with a computer model, and a physical model in BXB Studio's model shop. This multi-faceted approach to design allowed for a comprehensive understanding of space, providing a useful tool for architects and engineers in the subsequent stages of technical design development.
The design of The Farmhouse was not without its challenges. BXB Studio had to ensure a harmonious approach to nature, taking into consideration the play of light and shadow, the landform, existing greenery, and infrastructure. Large glazed surfaces were strategically placed in the eaves, dense greenery, or on the north side of the building to protect the house against excessive sunlight during the summer months. The designers also made a conscious effort to maintain the valuable tree stand, adhering to the principle of sustainable development.
The Farmhouse is a shining example of how traditional architecture can be transformed into a modern residential mansion without losing its original charm. It is a testament to BXB Studio's commitment to exploring the cultural context and creating designs that foster a strong relationship between man and nature. This project is a celebration of Polish architecture, a tribute to tradition, and a beacon of modern design.
